Mohammedia

Morocco

Built on liquid gold

Mohammedia is a busy commercial port with a friendly, welcoming yacht club and small marina. The port has been active since the 14th century but had gone into decline until the 1960s when prosperity returned with the development of a new oil refinery. The elegant town, pleasantly planted with trees and shrubs, has become a weekend and holiday resort for visitors from Casablanca or further afield. There has been a long association with horse breeding, training, racing and trading as evidenced by the prominent racecourse. Every July there is a popular festival of cultural and sporting events and exhibitions. Mohammedia Week is held during the first two weeks of August every year.
